What level of English is required for the Toefl?

There are many questions about the TOEFL, in this article we will answer the level of English that is required to obtain it. But what does Toefl mean?

TOEFL is an acronym for Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is the official name of the test.

What does the TOEFL certify?

Assess your ability to speak and understand English by analyzing your fluency in English through reading, speaking, listening, and writing in that language.

As you can see, these skills are those that are required to carry out your academic studies, which institutions use as evidence to guarantee that students can continue and succeed in the chosen course in a country, where the study plan is taught in English.

TOEFL score

The TOEFL test is neither passed nor failed. In other words, depending on the score you obtain, you will be able to access one level of the CEFR or another. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​is the criterion most used by public and private institutions to certify a certain level of English.

Through the TOEFL exam you can access certificates from A2 onwards. That is, you cannot get the A1, which is a very basic level. Each of the four parts of the TOEFL is scored from 0 to 30, for a total of 120 points.

Qualification requirements

It is true that each institution sets its own TOEFL scoring requirements, but each score could be considered equivalent to:

−−Less than 34 points on the TOEFL: equivalent to an A2 level of English that corresponds to the Cambridge KET.

−− Between 35 and 45 points on the TOEFL: equivalent to a B1 level of English that corresponds to the Cambridge PET.

−− Between 46 and 93 points on the TOEFL: equivalent to a B2 level of English that corresponds to Cambridge First.

−− Between 94 and 104 points on the TOEFL: equivalent to a C1 level of English that corresponds to Cambridge Advanced.

−− Between 115 and 120 points on the TOEFL: equivalent to a C2 level of English that corresponds to the Cambridge Proficiency
