How is the reading comprehension of the ielts exam?

60 minutes (without extra time for transfers).
Questions
It consists of 40 questions. The different types of questions can be: multiple choice, identify information (true / false / does not appear), identify the opinions / statements of the author (yes / no / does not appear), join information, join titles, join characteristics, join endings of Sentences, Complete Sentences, Complete Summaries, Complete Notes, Complete Tables, Complete Flowcharts, Complete Diagram Labels, Short Answer Questions.
Exam parts
It consists of three parts. The total length of the text is between 2150 and 2750 words.
- Academic reading comprehension
Each part contains a long text. The texts are authentic and come from books, publications, magazines and newspapers. They have been written for a non-specialist audience and deal with academic topics of general interest. The texts are suitable and accessible for those candidates who wish to study at universities or institutions of higher education, as well as for professionals who wish to register in an English-speaking country. Texts can range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical. They may contain non-verbal materials such as diagrams, graphs, or illustrations. If the text contains technical terminology, a simple glossary will be provided.
- Reading Comprehension (IELTS General Training)
The first part contains two or three short factual texts, one of which could be mixed (consisting of 6-8 short texts related by topic such as hotel advertisements). The topics are relevant to everyday life in an English-speaking country. The second part contains two short factual texts focusing on employment issues (eg, job application submission, company policies, pay and conditions, workplace facilities, staff development and training). The third part contains a longer and more complex text on a topic of general interest. The texts are authentic and come from notifications, advertisements, company manuals, official documents, books, magazines and newspapers.
Skills assessed
A wide variety of reading comprehension skills are assessed, including:
- read to grasp the essentials
- read to understand main ideas
- read to get the details
- understanding of conclusions and implicit meaning
- recognition of the opinions, attitudes, and purpose of the author
- follow the development of an argument.
Qualification method
For each correct answer 1 point is awarded. Scores out of a total of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are expressed in full bands and half bands
