How is ielts speaking?
Oral comprehension of the ielts english test
Duration Approximately 30 minutes (plus 10 min transfer).
Questions
It consists of 40 questions. The different types of questions can be: multiple choice, matching, labeling plans / maps / diagrams, completing forms, completing notes, completing tables, completing flowcharts, completing summaries, completing sentences or short answer questions.
Exam parts
It consists of four parts:
The first part is a conversation between two people in an everyday social context (eg, a conversation in a real estate agency).
The second part is a monologue in an everyday social context (eg, a speech about local services or a talk about preparing for meals during a conference).
The third part is a conversation involving up to four people in an educational or training context (eg, a university tutor and a student talking about a job or a group of students planning a research project).
The fourth part is a monologue on an academic topic (eg, a college class). Each part will be heard only once. They use voices and accents from different native speakers.
Skills assessed
A wide variety of listening skills are assessed, including: • understanding main ideas • understanding specific factual information • recognition of a speaker's opinions, attitudes, and purpose • tracking the development of an argument.
Qualification
For each correct answer 1 point is awarded. Scores out of a total of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are expressed in full bands and half bands.
