What is the writing portion of the ielts exam like? Ielts writing

It consists of 2 tasks. You must write at least 150 words for task 1 and a minimum of 250 words for task 2.

Exam parts

 It consists of 2 parts.

  •  Written expression (IELTS Academic)

 In Task 1 you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and you will have to describe, summarize or explain the information using your own words. You might be asked to describe and explain data, to describe the phases of a process, an object, or an event, or to explain how something works. In task 2 you will have to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The topics covered are of general interest and are suitable and easy to understand for those candidates who wish to study at universities or institutions of higher education, as well as for professionals who wish to register in an English-speaking country. Responses to tasks 1 and 2 should be written using an academic and semi-formal / neutral style.

  •  Written expression (IELTS General Training)

In task 1 you will be presented with a situation and you will have to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. You can write the letter using a personal or semi-formal / neutral style. In task 2 you will have to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The writing can have a somewhat more personal style than writing task 2 of the IELTS Academic Writing test. Topics are of general interest.

 Written expression (IELTS Academic)

 In Task 1, depending on the type of task, your ability to organize, present and possibly compare data, to describe the phases of a process or procedure, describe an object, event or sequence of events, or explain how something works will be assessed. In task 2, depending on the type of task, your ability to present a solution to a problem, present and justify an opinion, compare and contrast evidence, opinions and implications, and evaluate and question ideas, evidence or arguments will be assessed.

Written expression (IELTS General Training)

 In task 2, depending on the type of task, your ability to maintain personal correspondence will be evaluated in order to: obtain and provide general factual information, express needs, wishes, likes and dislikes and express opinions (points of view, complaints, etc.). Task 2 will assess your ability to provide general factual information, summarize a problem and present a solution, present and possibly justify an opinion, and evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence, or arguments.

 Qualification method

 Accredited IELTS examiners will assess your performance on each task according to the IELTS writing test assessment criteria (task performance / response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resources, grammatical variety and accuracy). You will find the public version of the evaluation criteria at www.ielts.org/criteria. Task 2 contributes twice as much to the written expression score as task 1.

Scores are expressed in full bands and half bands
