Differences between academic Ielts and general training Ielts

There is the possibility to choose between two modules:

Academic and General Training.

  • Academic IELTS The Academic IELTS is aimed at candidates who wish to study at universities or institutions of higher education, as well as professionals who wish to register in an English-speaking country.
  • IELTS General Training l The IELTS General Training is designed for candidates who wish to emigrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom) and for those who wish to train or study at a non-university level.

Each organization sets its own entry requirements. In some cases, both the Academic and General Training modules could be accepted. If you have questions about which module to choose, contact the organization to which you have sent your application to check their requirements. All four language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) will be assessed, unless you are exempt due to a disability (see the special requirements section). Everyone takes the same listening and speaking tests.

However, the reading comprehension and writing tests are different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression tests must be taken on the same day. The order of these tests may vary. There are no breaks between these three tests. The speaking test can be taken up to seven days before or after the other three tests.
