Special needs to take a Trinity exam

Trinity is committed to creating an inclusive environment where candidates with special needs, disabilities, and health conditions can demonstrate their skills and feel welcome.

Our goal is to make our exams accessible to everyone. We treat each student individually when considering how we can achieve this goal, recognizing that requirements vary. Candidates can be assured that we do not compromise the grading standard or allow the quality of the exams to be affected in any way. 

For candidates who require adjustments to their exam, or who want to inform the examiner of a disability or health condition, one of the following Special Needs Provision forms must be completed and submitted at the time of enrollment, along with  supporting evidence appropriate (if necessary, see section below).

Forms must be submitted at least 28 days prior to the exam date. If the request is for modified test materials (for example, large print or Braille), you must give at least six weeks' notice. Notes and forms given to the examiner on the day of the exam are not acceptable.

  • International and Life Skills Candidates
    Special needs accommodations must be requested through your university, school, or testing facility. Let your teacher or English center know if you have any requirements, and they will coordinate the request.
  • SELECT Candidates (UKVI, TfL)
    When you   book your exam online, please select 'Yes' in the part of the form where it says 'Special Needs / Requirements' and enter any information about your needs / requirements. A Trinity staff member will be in touch to discuss your needs and tell you how to request any arrangements.

Supporting evidence

We require evidence of the need for any adjustments that could potentially give an advantage to candidates who do not need them, or that alter the format of the exam. Please see the table below to find out which adjustments we require supporting evidence for.

The evidence must come from a suitably qualified medical or educational professional and must demonstrate how the candidate's condition affects access to the exam in question.  Trinity reserves the right to reject requests for adjustments if insufficient information is provided.

Provision of special needs

See the details below for some of the options available to candidates with special needs. This information is not exhaustive and we endeavor to respond to the individual needs of a candidate whenever possible.

Speaking and listening tests

1. Overtime (ISE, GESE, SfL)

Candidates with special needs, disabilities, and health conditions may require additional time to complete their exam; The amount of overtime available to qualifying candidates is typically 25%, although up to 100% may be requested in certain circumstances.

Evidence of need is required for all overtime, and additional evidence may be requested if more than 25% overtime is requested.

2. Compatible Headphones / Speakers for Task Listening (ISE)

Some candidates with hearing loss may need headphones to improve sound quality, reduce background noise, or be compatible with hearing aids. Candidates or centers are expected to provide their own equipment, and must send it in for inspection upon request. Supporting evidence is required for this fit.

3. Listening assignment transcript (ISE)

Some candidates with hearing loss will not be able to access the task of listening, even with headphones, and will need to read lips to understand what is being said. In these cases, the examiner can read a transcript of the listening assignment instead of playing a recording. Supporting evidence is required for this fit.

4. Informed examiner (ISE, GESE, SfL)

Sometimes it is helpful for the examiner to be informed about a candidate's condition so that he can be sensitive in the way he conducts the exam, even if no specific adjustments are needed. However, keep in mind that the assessment standards remain the same for all candidates.

Reading and writing tests

1. Overtime (ISE, SfL)

Candidates with special needs, disabilities, and health conditions may request additional time to complete their exam; The amount of overtime available to qualifying candidates is typically 25%, although up to 100% may be requested in certain circumstances.

2. Using the word processor (ISE, SfL)

Candidates who are unable to write by hand, due to a physical disability or a learning disability that affects (for example) the ability to structure work or write legibly by hand, may request the use of a word processor for their exams (where exams are generally paper-based).

Centers are expected to supply their own equipment, and they must ensure that all spelling and grammar functions are disabled, the computer is not connected to the Internet, and relevant files are removed. Centers may be asked to send teams for inspection. Supporting evidence is required for this fit.

3. Supervised breaks (ISE, SfL)

Breaks can be used when a candidate does not require additional time to complete the exam itself, but may require a "wait time".

If a break is required, exam timing is stopped and restarted when the candidate is ready to continue. During the supervised rest break, the candidate must not have access to the question / answer booklet document and must be accompanied by an examiner if they need to leave the examination room.

4. Extended / Modified Written Exam (ISE, SfL)

Written exams can be provided in alternate formats, usually large print (A3) and / or printed on colored paper. We can also provide documents in Braille: British Grade 1, British Grade 2 or UEB (Unified English Braille).
